Wonderful resource

Our team has moved away from the traditional book to this beautiful, eloquent resource. Incorporating solid "How Can I Comfort My Loved One?" suggestions has been remarked on by several families. Thanks for providing this booklet that compliments our service so well.

Hi James, we set out to provide updated, sensitive, gentle, and inviting materials so they are approachable and relatable - I'm so glad the families you serve have found the booklets to be helpful. Your kind words affirm our mission and we can't thank you enough for sharing them!

Affectionately known as the hospice "butterfly book," Nature Gave Us Butterflies helps the caregiver understand pain management, breathing changes, confusion, agitation, skin changes, changes in elimination, socialization, withdrawal, and other important topics. The author gently relates the patient’s changes to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, using nature metaphors to support the retention of information during an overwhelming time.

Highlights and topics covered:

Part One covers Specific Symptoms and Issues:

  • Pain Management:  It’s Essential
  • Decreased Food and Fluid Intake:  Aren’t They Uncomfortable?
  • Breathing Changes
  • Confusion, Agitation, and Restlessness
  • Skin Changes and Skin Care
  • Changes in Elimination
  • Socialization, Resolution, and Withdrawal

Part Two offers a Chronological Timeline, providing a gentle guideline regarding “what to expect” as the patient’s health declines:

  • The Emotions of Goodbye
  • One to Three Months Before Death
  • One to Two Weeks Before Death
  • Two Days to a Few Hours Before Death
  • When Death Has Occurred
  • In tandem with the chronological timeline, we gently relate the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual changes to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.  Using nature metaphors allows the hospice professional gently educate and connect to all backgrounds, cultures, and religions.
